National Conference on "Current Trends in Testing & Evaluation" (26th & 27th October 2017)

This programme was conducted by National Testing Service-India at CIIL, Mysuru and around 40 school/college teachesr and researchers from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh participated in this 2 day event. On 26th October the conference was inaugurated by Prof. L.N. Aurora, former Director, Prasaranga, University of Mysore and Prof. D.G. Rao, Director, CIIL presided over the function. Prof. Aurora, while delivering his inaugural address stressed the need to explore new methods and techniques of testing and evaluation to meet the challenges of new requirements of the society. He recommended optimum use of ICT in this area to ensure economy, integrity and reliability of the tests, Prof. D.G. Rao, Director, CIIL in his presidential remarks expressed his happiness on the initiative taken by NTS-India and assured all kinds of support and guidance in it’s future endeavors of such kind.
During six academic/technical sessions of this programme more than 20 research papers covering different sub-themes of the topic were presented. The presentations were followed by interaction of the participants with the paper presented. Prof. P. Perumal Samy, Dr. L. Ramamoorthy, Dr. M. Balakumar, Dr.V. Ilangovan, Shri. Pankaj Dwivedi and Shri. Tariq Khan all present and farmer faculty members of the institute presided over the academic session Dr. C.V. Sivaramakrishna, RRO; Shri. Sujoy Sarkar, Shri. Alindra Brahma and Dr. L. Prem Kumar (all LJROs) of the institute extended their active support and co-operation to make this event a success. The overall guidance was provided by Prof. PRD Fernandez, Deputy Director, CIIL and Head, NTS. It was coordinated by Sri Pankaj Dwivedi, JRO and Dr.Biresh Kumar NTS-I, Dr. R. Shakunthala, JRP, NTS-I compered the proceedings.

Training cum Workshop on Statistical Methods to Linguists & Educationists (9th to 11th of October 2017)

A three-day workshop-cum-Training Programme on Statistical Methods for Linguists and Educationists organised at National Testing Service-India (NTS-I). Shri. Pankaj Dwivedi, Officer In-charge of NTS-I and Coordinator of the workshop, welcomed the participants and briefed about the objectives of the workshop. He said that in the last few decades, research has moved from theoretical to data based and experimental mode. Statistics undeniably holds a central position in such studies. For any research study to be objective, unbiased, reliable, valid and scientific; it is assumed that a researcher must follow the necessary steps: from collection and organization of data to analysis of data and interpretation of the findings, in a sequential and systematic way. He further added that working knowledge of statistics is essential for all researchers working in any discipline including linguistics and education.
Dr. V.Ilangovan, SRP, NTS-I was present on the occasion and spoke on how the Statistical Methods workshop would immensely benefit the teachers and researchers working in the disciplines of linguistics and education.
Dr. T.V. Somashekar, RIE, Mysuru; Dr. N. Kalaiarasi, NKT College, Chennai and Dr. B.S. Biradar, University of Mysore, Mysuru trained the participants in basic statistics, statistical tools/statistical packages. Dr. R. Shakunthala, JRP, NTS-I was the Local Coordinator of the workshop. The overall guidelines were provided by Prof. P. Rozario Dharmesh Fernandez, Head, NTS-I and Mr. Pankaj Dwivedi, Officer -in-charge, NTS-I. Prof. D. G. Rao, Director, CIIL, Mysuru is overall patron of the workshop.
About 35 participants from several central and state universities and other academic institutes of India attended the training programme.

5 days Training cum Workshop on Testing and Evaluation and Question Item Writing in Hindi
(17th to 21st of July 2017)

This workshop was organized by NTS-India at UTRC, Lucknow from 17-21 July, 2017. 33 teachers from different schools, colleges and universities of Lucknow, Barabanki, Kanpur districts of UP participated in this programme. Sri Pankaj Dwivedi Officer In-charge, NTS-I, Dr. Biresh Kumar, RP, NTS-I and Dr. Sanjay Prasad Srivastava, JRP, NTS-I, executed this programme as per schedule. They shed light on the theoretical and practical aspects of the process of evaluation and item writing as well as the objectives and activities of NTS-I and Mr. Dwivedi stressed the need for examination reforms in our country and the importance of organizing similar programmes. During the practice sessions more than 1500 question items pertaining to language and literature discipline were developed. On 21.7.2017, during the valedictory ceremony of this programme, Prof. Malika Siddiqui, former Principal, UTRC, Lucknow and Sri Pankaj Dwivedi present Principal-in-charge of UTRC and Prof. Mallika thanked the participants for attending this programme and for getting their knowledge enhanced in this area. While giving feedback, the participants expressed their satisfaction in attending the workshop and stressed on the need of organizing many such programs in future.

5 days Training cum Workshop on Testing and Evaluation and Question Item Writing in Urdu
(17th to 21st of July 2017)

Five day training cum workshop on testing and evaluation and item writing for Urdu lecturers of Lucknow and Kanpur regions was held at UTRC, Lucknow under the supervision of Shri. Pankaj Diwivedi, the officer in charge of NTS-India. Dr. Md. Saleem Ahmed and Dr. G.M. Ansari (JRP’s) of NTS-India coordinated the programme held 17th to 21st July 2017.
A similar training cum workshop had been arranged on the UTRC campus during this period (i.e. from 17 – 21 July, 2017).
On 17th July, the combined inaugural session for both Urdu & Hindi Programmes was held at the Conference Hall of UTRC. Dr. Sanjay welcomed the participants, Dr. Ansari briefed about the programme’s objectives, Dr. Biresh Kumar elaborated the activities of NTS-India and CIIL and its all schemes and projects. Dr. Saleem thanked all the authorities of CIIL for granting permission to conduct the programme and all the participants as well. There were around 70 lecturers participated in this session.
In the afternoon, Dr. Saleem delivered a lecture on ‘Test Types and Techniques’ through the PPT in such a simple way that everybody understood the concept. In the last session the documentary film on ‘Achievement Test’ developed by NTS-India was shown to the participants, they got the concept and praised the NTS-I for developing such documentary film.
Next day on 18th, Dr. Biresh Kumar delivered his lecture on ‘Taxonomy of Educational Objectives’ and its constituents in such a simple way that everybody understood the concept & discussed. Then, Dr. Sanjay delivered his lecture on ‘Scoring Procedure’ through the PPT, this lecture also was very informative and effective.
During the last session, Shri Pankaj Diwivedi addressed the gathering and assured to extend all the support from NTS & CIIL. Then, Dr. Maurya, former RP of NTS-I and retired lecturer delivered his lecture on ‘Importance of evaluation’ with illustrative examples.
Around one thousand (1000) question items on both language and literature components were developed. Prof. Mallika Khursheed, the former Professor cum Deputy Director, CIIL, Principal, UTRC, Lucknow was invited as a special guest. She was very much impressed by the NTS activities and thanked Shri Pankaj Diwivedi who assured her to continue conducting more workshops at UTRC, Lucknow. Dr. Maurya also was the special invitee for this session; he also thanked the CIIL authorities for conducting an important workshop in Lucknow.
The feedback given by the participated indicated their satisfaction & the immense benefit they got by attending this course.

3 day workshop on Finalisation of Glossary of Evaluation Terms in Manipuri (10th to 12th of July 2017)

The National Testing Service-India of Centre for Testing and Evaluation of the Institute organized a 3 day workshop on “Finalisation of Glossary of Evaluation Terms in Manipuri” from 10th to 12th July, 2017 under overall guidance of the Director, CIIL.
This workshop was initiated to ensure the suitability of the Assamese parallels to the evaluation terms (for about 1000 terms as in the source book “An Introduction to Evaluation Terminology” published at CIIL). The subject experts invited are Shri. Yashwanta Singh (Professon, Department of Linguistics, Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal), Dr. Ch. Shamjubala Devi (Asst. Professor, NERIE, Umaiam), Ms. Rosy Yumnam (Asst. Professor, EFLU, Shillong), Dr. L.Bijenkumar Singh (Asst. Professor, Centre for Naga Tribal Language Studies, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus), Dr. W.Pinky Devi (Dept. of Linguistics, Nagaland University). The Local co-ordinator of this workshop is Prof. A.K.Mishra (Director, EFLU, Shillong). This programme was conducted under the supervision of Prof. P.R.Dharmesh Fernandez (Head, NTS-I). Dr. Biresh Kurmar (RP) was also involved in the workshop.
The workshop started with the scrutiny of the evaluation terms and their Manipuri Parallels. All the terms are checked thoroughly with reference to their definitions in the source book and every now and then discussions held for the purpose of finalizing the terms along with cross verifications in different subject areas like statistics, education, psychology, linguistics, and literature. In the last day all the terms were corrected and overall consolidation was made. Finally, the experts felt satisfactory and recommended for its publication.

The National Testing Service-India of Centre for Testing and Evaluation of the Institute organized a 3 day workshop on “Finalisation of Glossary of Evaluation Terms in Assamese” from 10th to 12th July, 2017 under overall guidance of the Director, CIIL.
This workshop was initiated to ensure the suitability of the Assamese parallels to the evaluation terms (for about 1000 terms as in the source book “An Introduction to Evaluation Terminology” published at CIIL). The subject experts invited are Prof. Ajit Kumar Baishya (Department of Linguistics, Assam University, Silchar), Dr. Arzuman Ara (Asst. Professor, EFLU, Shillong). The Local co-ordinator of this workshop is Prof. A.K.Mishra (Director, EFLU, Shillong). This programme was conducted under the supervision of Mr. Pankaj Dwivedi (Officer i/c, NTS-I) is Dr. R.Shakunthala (JRP), NTS faculty, is also involved in this workshop
The workshop started with the discussion on the aptness of the Assamese parallels for all the evaluation terms. All the terms are checked thoroughly with reference to their definitions in the source book and every now and then discussions held for the purpose of finalizing the terms along with cross verifications in different subject areas like statistics, education, psychology, linguistics, and literature. Finally, the experts felt satisfactory and recommended for its publication subject to final proof reading.

National Testing Service-India (NTS-I) of Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Manasagangotri, Mysore in collaboration with St.Xavier’s College, Palayamkotai, Tamil Nadu, organised a five day Training-cum-Workshop on Evaluation & Testing and Item writing for the College level teachers working in and around Palayamkottai and Kutralam regions.
The main objective of the programme was to provide training on the concepts of testing & evaluation and item writing practice to the teachers of above said regions. The main focus was to make the teachers to develop quality question items in Tamil language which will pave a way to create sufficient manpower in this field.
In the inaugural session, Dr. S.J.Idhayaraja of St.Xavier’s college welcomed the gathering. Rev.Dr.Danis Ponniah, S.J, Rector and Provincial Designate of St.Xavier’s College Inaugurated the programme. In his inaugural address he shared his experience about the importance of evaluation in the field of education. He also lauded the work of NTS as “National Testing Service has taken up a noble task in the field of testing and evaluation to start with focusing on Indian languages and literature". This was followed by the Presidential address by Dr. V.Britto. S.J (Principal, St.Xavier’s College). Prof. P.R.Dharmesh Fernandez, Deputy Director and Head of NTS-I, in his brief speech emphasized the importance of Evaluation in the field of education and highlighted the need for improving the assessment system in the country. Shri. Pankaj Dwivedi, Officer i/c of NTS-I in his brief speech highlighted the background information which led to the establishment of NTS-I and objectives of the programme. Dr. V. Ilangovan (SRP, NTS-I), Dr.R.Shakunthala (JRP,NTS-I).
For this programme Dr. U. Subramaniam (Associate Professor, St.Xavier’s college of Education), Dr. L.Vasanthi Madona (St.Ignatious College of Education, Palayamkottai), and Dr. T.Sethupandian (Formerly of Madurai Kamaraj Unversity, Madurai) were invited as experts to give lectures on the topics “Introduction to Taxonomy of Educational Objectives”, “Tools of Testing and Evaluation” and “Introduction to Language and Literature components of Tamil” respectively. In addition to this, Prof. P.R.Dharmesh Fernandez, Shri. Pankaj Dwivedi, Dr. V.Ilangovan, and Dr. R.Shakunthala of NTS-I were trained the participants in different aspects of evaluation concepts.
Altogether 48 teachers of language and literature disciplines from different colleges of Palayamkottai and Kutralam regions participated in this programme. Each of the participants developed not less than 50 question items, altogether about 2000 question items of different types were produced in Tamil language and literature.
Rev.Dr.Thomas Alexander S.J was invited as the chief guest during the valedictory session of the programme. In his speech he appreciated the work of NTS, particularly the training programme. During this session few participants shared their views about the programme. Dr.V.Britto. S.J., Dr.N.Ramachandran, Dr. Idhayaraja, Shri. Pankaj Dwivedi, Dr.V.Ilangovan, and Dr. R.Shakunthala were present on this occasion.

5 days Training cum Workshop on Testing and Evaluation and Question Item Writing in Kannada
(24th to 28th April 2017)

The National Testing Service- India (NTS-I) of Central Institute of Indian Languages organized a 5 day workshop-cum training Programme on “Testing & Evaluation and Item writing Practice” for Research Scholars of KIKS of Mysore University from 24th to 28th April 2017.
The main objective of this workshop was to give training on the Basic Concepts of Evaluation and Testing including item writing, research methodology, etc. Around 40 Research scholars of different disciplines have participated. In this workshop each participants were asked to write 40 question items covering different item formats. Overall, the participants have produced around 1500 question items in Kannada language.
Prof. P. Rozario Dharmesh Fernandez, of CIIL Inaugurated the programme. The programme started with course objectives by Shri. Pankaj Dwivedi, Officer i/c, NTS-I. The subject experts invited are Prof. A.Murigeppa (Former Vice Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi), Prof. L.N.Aurora (Formerly of Mysore University), Prof. Yashodhara (Formerly ofUniversity of Mysore) and they gave lectures on different topics such as “Introduction to Language & Literature components of Kannada”, “Research Methodology”, and “Statistical Procedures with reference to Research” respectively. In addition to this, Dr. V.Ilangovan, Dr. Biresh Kumar, Dr. G.M.Ansari, Dr. R.Shakunthala, Dr. Md. Rizwan, Dr. Sanjay Prasad Srivastava, and Dr. Saleem Ahmad of NTS-I were also trained the participants in different aspects of evaluation concepts and item writing methodologies.
